Electronics and Water Vapour
A recipe for disaster

Electronics and water vapour don’t mix! It is easy to keep liquid water out with a good seal, but water vapour can flow through the material of a seal itself – and once in it condenses and can ruin the product. Some sealing materials, such as silicone, EVOH or PVOH for example, can be so vapour permeable that they almost might as well might not be there. Versaperm has developed an ultra-precise meter to help solve the problem.

It works on all seals – both as material samples and as finished seals. It even works on components, assemblies and finished products and can usually turn around results within 30 minutes to 24 hours, instead of the weeks taken by more traditional measurement techniques.

Results are typically accurate in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to Parts Per Billion (PPB) range and it can measure multiple components, material samples, seals or enclosures all at the same time.  It can control environmental conditions including temperature ( -80 to over +1000 C ), pressure, partial pressure and humidity.

Versaperm systems can measure the permeability for all of the vapours commonly present around electronics, including hydrocarbons, solvents, CO2 and the gases used during manufacture. 

Measuring assembled electronics systems is especially important because processes, such as thermoforming, extruding, moulding, heating, sealing or pressure can all dramatically change their ability to keep water vapour out.
